Education is expected to develop a person, increase his knowledge, awareness and give him a broader perspective of life.In short education helps to improve ones personality. But how far does it actually help an individual?
Women have always been prey to various atrocities from ancient times. The rape cases and molestations continue even in the present scenario.Goa,the state which contributes a lions share towards tourism revenue is highly unsafe for the tourists. The other states are not far behind.Even the chilren are not spared.A seven year old was raped in the capital two weeks back.Sadly, the perpetrators of most of these crimes are educated. The respect element is totally lacking in the "educated" youth of incredible or shining India. The patriarchal and conservative thoughts are still entrenched in the minds of most of the educated people. In this context,I feel education has contributed little towards improving the horizon of thoughts of people.
The world is moving towards a power crisis.Energy shortage is a serious threat."Switch off the lights and fans when not in use".This is a commonly encountered phrase. But how many of us actually do it??
Kerala is one state that boasts of its literecy rate(am talking about the literacy beyond the signing of names).Yet the so called pseudo god-men,the latest in the news find it a very favourable destination. So if education actually makes you more aware, why do these people find it so easy to make a living in this state??
The suicide rate and honour killings continue to show a rising trend despite the various measures taken by the government. So I feel we have reached a position where lack of education cannot be blamed for what is happening around us.(The recent gujjar agitation included, which became this worse only due to BJPs renege )It is the mindset, the thoughts of the people that needs a change, which has a long way to go....

i'm sorry but i couldn't find it anywhere in my texts that i should switch of the lifgt and fans wen not in use.. ohh. pls stop this bull shitting.. a person need not be educated to understand such stuff.. all that a person need is common sense.. i find that pple havin lesser common sense than me or r less mature than me even to handle their own things in life can score high marks in exams(no pple, i never meant aparna!!!)
the reason for the so called godmen to hav established themselves very much in kerala has got nothin to do with our education.. it has got everythin to do wit the culture.. v come from a society where pple have overwhelming respect for elderly men, knowledge showering pple, spiritual pple and astrologists.. so wen they feel that one guy knows something more than oneself in something related to spirituality... they r simply bowled over..
did any of ur teachers teach u that rapin is wrong or molestin is wrong?... come on.. these kind of things r not to be taught or pple will never be educated on such things.. it is the society and the childhood background of a person that leads to such activities.. if and only if the society teaches its new generation and shows them by example wat good is and wat good virtues or morals is.. only then can v come out of this problem...
can the author pls enlighten me with one measure that the govt has taken to prevent honor killin.. i regret to say that it might be a lack of newspaper reading.. kindly help me..
@rahul
firstly, you talk about common sense.my point is the very people who are expected to show that fail to do that.I did nt mean that uneducated people do not do that.what I meant was even a person who s fully aware of everything fails to follow it.Now you find it "bullshit",hope you come up with a better term later on !
spirituality-if you get bowled over by a person who knows more than you in,that s your ignorance.A person who s aware of what s happening around him n is able to identify between good n bad would nt fall prey to all this.
Our teachers have taught us to respect others.Society will change only if people change.People will change only if there s an impetus n that is education.
You cant have laws against suicide or honour killing. But you have a subject called value education(I had it in school),where there s a section devoted to all this..
aparna, u said:
"The patriarchal and conservative thoughts are still entrenched in the minds of most of the educated people"
i didn't get ur point here. do u mean to say that rapists and molesters and criminals tend to carry out anti-social acts because their lifestyle and thinking is conservative? in that case, i will not agree with u, no matter how u try to justify it. first of all, tell me how u define the word conservative in the indian context. If leading a conservative life is bad, it may not aid in all-round progress of india, but it certainly is not the x-factor that sets ppl raping and bombing and looting abt.
if, however, u meant that conservative ppl r narrow-minded, and they are vulnerable to becoming VICTIMS, then it would sound more real. its not conservatism that drives CRIMINALS to sabotage society. its the frustration born out of conservatism that does. its bcos they do not have an open-mind towards society.
if u re-phrase it as fanaticism and resorting to violence for establishing blind beliefs, it'd fit in perfectly..
secondly, what rahul said abt common sense hits a score. he's right. one doesn't need to be educated or even literate for having common sense. Aparna, u were right too, when u said that education shapes up ones personality. But in the end, how much education has benifitted that individual depends on his own attitude towards education, and his passion for learning and understanding the world around him. practical knowledge is more important than education.
i'll give u a simple example. ppl who work as labourers and mechanics generally have more common sense than an educated guy who does paperwork in an office environment.. its safe to say that the former has quicker instincts, and since the former leads a poor man's life with many restrictions, he'll always be on alert ( like saving power , helping a stranger in trouble etc... the educated guy will not have time for "silly and trifling" matters)
only difficult situations can teach man something. when he faces one, he learns to co-operate and adjust.. but when he has too many resources at his disposal, he doesn't mind wasting it..
and abt pseudo god-men.. its a basic problem with indians.. their questioning attitude is severely wrong..
there r two kinds of ppl in majority:
a) ppl who never question issues and authorities, believe in something without checking for its authenticity..and finally get duped
b) the other ppl r those who continuously ask questions.. but they will never accept the answers.. they question because they need to vent out their skepticism.. they ask questions not to know answers, but to prove that some establishment is wrong, or certain ideals r false.. they want to emphasise their non-belief in something.. this is also stubborn and blind
both these groups r logically harmful. the first group harms themselves, and disrupts the religions sanctity thru exploiting. the second group harms genuine god-men's followers and spreads wrong messages in society
the solution?
india needs ppl who r willing to question rationally, and r ALSO open minded to receiving the answers. india needs ppl who can analyse the radicalism of these answers so they can evaluate their own stance, rather than lie sunken in uncertainty..
abt education again, as its the core topic in this post..
education has definitely affected u in a good way, aparna, cos u think on these lines.. u r disturbed when something bad happens to society.. education can, to some extent teach ppl how to be more moral..
BUT, its not education alone that has made u think on these lines.. its ur human-nature.. various others must also have studied the same "value education" that u had in school.. look around u and u'll realise that there r very few ppl who've actually absorbed what the subject hoped to teach.. no matter what it teaches, the BASIC HUMAN NATURE cannot be totally moulded or transformed in a general case.. it may make angels out of some bad ppl..but its very, very rare.. admit it!
if a guy is money-minded, he'll use only that part of education that'll make him stinking rich.. he won't care for the other parts.. even if u stuff it into his mouth, he'll spit it out.. reason? basic human nature.. education can't solve everything.. but gradually, very slowly it can lead to a better "quality of life".. thats all
summing up,
practical experience and realisation makes u care for the world..
education generally gives u a better quality of life..
ur basic nature is just what decides everything.. :-)
i would like to add to schrei's point that basic nature is fully influenced by his/ her's family background and peer group..
no, its not.. what then , are these "inborn qualities?"
how can inborn qualities be influenced by peer grp and family environment.. in many places we've seen that two brothers or sisters or siblings r totally different in their nature.. even if they grow up in exactly the same background.. (take the case of twins, for example.. they WILL be different cos of their basic human-nature).. get my point?
how do u think pple r havin inborn qualities?.. Right from wen the child is in its mother's womb, its character starts moulding, influenced by the experiences of the mother durin the pregnancy period.. so wat i feel is that the soceity has the major role in it..
yes, the child is influenced by society to a major extent too.. but human beings r not born EMPTY.. there r different ways by which babies respond to different stimuli.. this would depend upon their intelligence (inborn, not implanted) and genetic factors..
as we're digressing from the topic, i'd like to cut it short here.
